A dress shirt accessory that most people don't know about or fail to recognize the importance of is collar stays. These are the small strips of plastic or metal that are inserted into the collar flip on a dress shirt. This is to ensure that the shirt collar is kept straight and flat against the collarbone. Without collar stays, the collar would be vulnerable to wrinkles, and would most likely end up disheveled and out of place.

For the most part, collar stays do their job and keep the collar looking crisp, but depending on how they are treated and what material they are made of, they can do more harm than good. There are two general types of collar stays, removable and sewn in. They each have their benefits and shortcomings when it comes to washing your dress shirt and ironing your dress shirt.

The big advantage of sewn in collar stays is that you won't have to worry about taking them out and putting them back in every time you wash your dress shirt. Also, they won't get lost. However, they present a problem when drying and ironing the dress shirt. If you use a dryer to dry your dress shirts, this process can ruin sewn in collar stays if they are made of plastic. The heat that the collar stays go through during the dry cycle causes them to curl up resulting in a misshaped collar. Also, when ironing your dress shirt, the extreme heat from your iron can ruin the collar stays. Obviously this won't happen with removable collar stays as you can take them out. But they are much more likely to get lost. If you take out your removable collar stays to get your dress shirts cleaned or ironed, make sure you put them in a safe spot so you can find them again.
