Perspiration & Body Odor

With all the recent advancements in grooming technology and the plethora of creams, gels, lotions and other fragrant products now available to men, there’s no excuse for smelling stinky – or if there is we haven’t heard it. Yet, for a lot of reasons, more than a few guys out there just can’t seem to beat BO and continue to torture their wives and girlfriends while cuddling or draw frowns from people in crowded elevators and subway cars. Never fear though, because a high-tech solution could soon be on the horizon.

Of course, in one of our previous posts, we wrote about an anti-odor patch from Odegon Technology, which may some day help chronic BO sufferers alleviate offensive smells. But, to bring another flicker of hope to those of you coping with persistent funk, you may be able to say bye-bye to the embarrassing stench of sweat with scented fabrics recently developed by researches at University of Porto, in Portugal.

These fabrics contain small capsules which are first injected with assorted scents, like expensive perfumes or even peel-apart samples from magazines, and then inserted into the fabric itself. Measuring between one and one hundred micrometers in length, researchers claim that these tiny capsules can not only eliminate the stench of sweat (and presumably other sources of bad odor) but also remove dirt which may have become trapped within the fabric.

The scientists behind this breakthrough, first manufactured these microcapsules with formalin (the scientific name for formaldehyde), a carcinogenic substance hazardous to both our health and the environment. However, perhaps after realizing the obvious appeal such textiles would hold for legions of malodorous men, researchers began using non-toxic, non-hazardous plastic material in order to make these fabrics safe for consumers.

According to a spokesman from the Portuguese team responsible for this advancement in odor-fighting technology, these fabrics could easily be used to make socks, underwear, suits and other forms of clothing after additional research. Indeed, with this practical way of preventing body odor, scented shirts are surely on their way to compete with the perfume companies when it comes to keeping us smelling fresh.
